We are the “Association des Veuves du Genocide” (AVEGA) Agahozo, established in Rwanda in 1995 after the genocide committed against Tutsis and officially recognized as a non-governmental organization by the Rwandan government. Our mission is to create forums of healing, mutual support, and social economic development for widows of the Genocide and their dependents across the country.

Since our inception, we have been dedicated to implementing various programs that address critical areas such as Health care, Women’s rights, Social Protection, Peace Building and Conflicts Management, and Access to Justice  & Advocacy programs. In 2005, we began a process of reviewing our interventions to remain relevant to the changing context and adapt to current needs, AVEGA established health centers for members and general population, started  .
As part of our vision to foster social justice, we expanded the scope of our interventions in 2005 to encompass vulnerable groups in the general population, including other vulnerable women, children, and families affected by conflicts, in addition to widows of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

AVEGA’s commitment to fostering unity and social cohesion is exemplified through the establishment of inclusive health centers for the entire population, aiming to benefit all beneficiaries. In addition, our community programs are specifically designed to cater to the needs of everyone in vulnerable groups, thus promoting a sense of belonging and solidarity among all members of the society we serve. Through these initiatives, we strive to build a cohesive and interconnected community, where each individual is valued and supported, regardless of their background or circumstances. Together, we work towards creating a more inclusive and compassionate society, where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive and contribute to the collective well-being.

Our core focus lies in improving access to healthcare, socio-economic opportunities, and access to justice for those we serve. Furthermore, we are committed to promoting gender parity and equipping our members, women, and children with the necessary tools to transform and rebuild their lives.

AVEGA Agahozo, is an organization that strives to create a better future for widows and vulnerable groups in Rwanda, enabling them to lead healthier, empowered, and more secure lives.
